Bath CC 1st XI v Bristol CC 1st XI
Bath CC 1st XI returned to winning ways against Bristol CC 1st XI at North Parade on Saturday.
Bristol captain Louie Shaw won the toss and asked Bath to bat first on what looked like a good wicket for batting. This was proven, as the Bath openers made a positive start which then built into the opening partnership of the season, as Jack Scrivens (93) and Brad Porteous (133) put on 219 before Scrivens was caught off the bowling of spinner, Rishi Panchal in the 36th over. Porteous then took charge, playing the lead role in adding a further 52 in just five overs before he was out for an excellent 133. With just nine overs left, Bath were potentially looking at a score close to 350, but Sam Young had other ideas, as he joined Justin Marshall (43*). Young smashed the fastest 50 at North Parade this season, as he raced to 61 in just 22 balls, which included nine fours and three sixes. When Young was out the Bath batters took the score up to a very commanding 375-4.
Bristol’s reply got off to a good start with both openers batting positively to take the score past 50 at the required run rate, but the introduction of Brad Porteous into the attack soon paid dividends as he trapped Miles Kantolinna in front for 23. Fellow opener, Nic Halstead Cleak continued to bat positively, but he lost partners regularly as the off spin of Louis Brown (5-36) put pressure on the Bristol side’s middle and low order. When Halstead Cleak was the sixth batter out for an excellent 104 off just 84 balls, the score was on 185, and with almost 200 still needed, the match was Bath’s. Within ten overs it was a return to winning ways for Bath, as Bristol were bowled out for 230. Bath picked up 20 points to remain in second place in Premier One, just one point behind top side, Bridgwater CC 1st XI.
Bath CC 2nd XI v Bedminster CC 2nd XI
Bath 2nd XI travelled to Bristol on Saturday to play Bedminster CC 2nd XI. Bedminster’s captain won the toss and elected to bat, and the Bristol side got off to a fine start, passing 50 without losing a wicket, and then taking their score up to 98 before Mark Coombes was out for an excellent 52. Bath then continued to take wickets at regular intervals, but a solid 60 from Bedminster’s number six, Alex Tryfonos helped the Bristol side up to a very competitive 266-9 from their 50 overs.
Despite losing three quick wickets to find themselves 46-3 Bath’s opening bat, Campbell McKegg continued to bat very positively and when captain, Will Arney joined McKegg at 113-4 a solid partnership began to blossom, which added a further 88 runs before McKegg was bowled for an excellent 121 from just 98 balls. With Bath’s skipper at the crease and a further 66 runs required, there was still a chance, but wickets continued to fall and when Arney (33) was the eighth batter out, Bath quickly slipped to a 37-run loss as they were bowled out for 229 in the last over. Despite two losses in a row, Bath’s 2nd XI remains fourth in the league.
Bath CC 3rd XI v Bohemians CC 1st XI
Bath’s 3rd XI recorded their second win in a row, as they came out on top against Bohemian’s CC 1st XI at the Brownsword ground on Saturday. Bath won the toss and elected to bat, and made a bright start with skipper, Thiaan Aspeling (32) and Sam Barnes (15) taking the shine off the new ball. When both openers were out, number three, Tim Scott (57) then took control, and with some solid contributions from the lower and middle order, Bath got up to a competitive 209-8 from their 40 overs.
Bohemians quickly found themselves three down as a result of an excellent opening spell from Tim Scott (2-40) and Sam Barnes (3-27), and despite two batters passing 30, Bath always looked in control to eventually bowl the Bristol side out for 169 in the 36th over, to win by 40 runs.
Bath CC 4th XI v Timsbury CC 2nd XI
Bath CC 4th XI unfortunately found themselves on the end of a heavy defeat on Saturday when they faced Timsbury CC 2nd XI away. Bath won the toss and elected to field, and the Timsbury batters quickly got into their work scoring positively with all the top six passing double figures, and four batters passing 40 – Oliver Davis (42), Paul Cracknell (47), Tristan Versfield (50) and Rob Clothier (60) taking the Timsbury score up to 309-4. Pick of the Bath bowlers was L Welsh with 2-23.
Bath made a solid start against Timsbury’s opening attack, but the introduction of first change bowler, Zak Cox had a devastating effect as he picked up four quick Bath wickets to take complete control of the match. Despite number six L Welsh hitting 32, this was the top score of the Bath innings and the away team were eventually bowled out for 109 in the 30th over to lose by 200 runs.
