Bath vs Bridgwater match report

26 June 2021

After disappointing defeats to Bedminster in the league last Saturday and in the Somerset t20 to Lansdown on Thursday, it was great to see the boys get back to winning ways today.

A tough trip to Bridgwater resulted in a 6 wicket win, inspired by some disciplined bowling and contributions from all the batsmen.

George Axtell took 2 early wickets to leave Bridgwater 16-2, before Brad Porteous then removed dangerman Will Smeed lbw for 26. From then on wickets were hard to come by but thanks to good spells from Matt Cadywould and James Arney the run rate never threatened to get out of control. A direct hit run out from Sam Young removed Michael Coles before he could inflict too much damage and 2 more wickets for Porteous and 1 for Paul Muchall saw Bridgwater finish on 217-7.

In reply the newly formed opening partnership of Porteous and Tim Rouse put on 77 for the first wicket, batting with great control and punishing anything loose before Porteous was dismissed for 45. Rouse fell one short of his half century as he was caught at mid on and the game was finely poised at 127/3. However Ben Wells pressed on the accelerator with a rapid 48 from 53 balls, before he was out caught behind. This brought skipper Sam Mount to the crease to join Sam Young, and the 2 of the them eased to the total with 5 overs spare thanks to some big hitting scoring 43 from 25 balls in their partnership.

Bridgwater 217/7 - Porteous 3/44, Axtell 2/46

Bath 220/4 - Rouse 49, Wells 48, Porteous 45, Young 35*

A trip to Wales beckons tomorrow for the next stop on the road to Lord’s in the National KO at St Fagan’s CC.
