Bath CC groundsman reaches new heights after being rated the best in the Premier Division
29 January 2024
After having the home pitches prepared at North Parade rated the best in the league in 2023, Bath Cricket Club’s dedicated groundsman, Alex Woodward has been awarded ‘Merit’ in Level 2 Sports and Turf Management from Bridgwater and Taunton College. This recognition reflects Woodward’s outstanding commitment to maintaining the highest standards at Bath Cricket Club Ground’s, at North Parade and at the top of Lansdown Hill.
Before starting at Bath Cricket Club in March 2021, Woodward had no experience with any groundwork having previously worked in the hospitality industry at the University of Bath, The Griffin, and The King William.
Woodward started the Level 2 Sports Turf Management course in March 2022 through Bridgwater and Taunton College. The course included all sports, not just cricket, so it can prepare participants for all aspects of the industry. Teaching is in the workplace through one-to-one sessions, practical assessments, and regular employer feedback. Woodward completed an e-portfolio, written questions and undertook an end point assessment which led to him receiving his certificate.
Alex Woodward, Groundsman at Bath CC, said:
“Having always loved cricket, playing for The Star CC, and walking past North Parade regularly, I viewed working at Bath Cricket Club as the perfect job in the perfect office. So, when the opportunity came about to join the grounds team, I leapt at it.
Alongside my course, I took over the management of the North Parade squares during the 2023 season, and I’m proud that the umpires in the West of England Premier Division graded our pitches the best in the division across the season. I’m also delighted to have received a ‘Merit’ after such a busy two years at the club, as this shows that alongside the positive feedback from league umpires, I’ve also built up my knowledge base which can only help in the future.”
Rob Maggs, Director of Cricket, Bath Cricket Club said:
“Since joining the club Alex has demonstrated a real hunger and determination to learn his trade on the job, and to increase his knowledge through other channels. We’re all really delighted for Alex, as he’s making a real difference for the players and the club through the quality of pitches he has been preparing week in, week out.”
