4th team match report vs Barrow Gurney
7 July 2021
After a tricky defeat the weekend before, the 4th team looked forward to what always promises to be a close game away vs Barrow Gurney. Little did we know, it was set be a closer game than expected.
Skipper Matt elected to bat first on what looked like a good pitch. Barrow Gurney bowled some tight lines which made it tricky to build momentum, however, Thiaan and Emma were both able to make it into the 20s. The middle order struggled a little to get going until Dan (15) and Matt (25) put together an attacking partnership which included several sixes over the hedge into the adjacent farmer’s field. The standout partnership of the day was between James (22*) and Beth (25*) which took us up to a score of 160 which, whilst a smaller total than we had hoped for, we knew gave us a chance if we were able to bowl and field well.
After tea, we headed out with optimism that a few early wickets could keep us in the game and in the second over, we were able to make a good start with two wickets in the second over including a great direct hit run out from Dan. Just the start we needed as both of Barrow Gurney’s openers left without scoring. Barrow Gurney built a couple of strong partnerships in the middle order, but the bowlers were able to continue to take wickets at vital times to keep us in the game backed up with some strong fielding. Angus took 2 excellent catches, Thiaan took a good catch at slip, and Emma and Beth paired up for another run out. Scott took 2 wickets in the 39th over meaning that Barrow Gurney needed 5 to win. Angus bowled very tightly, and Barrow Gurney snuck a few runs off the edge meaning they came to match our total of 160 with one ball remaining. The field came in, but we were unable to prevent the ball coming off an outside edge down to the boundary, meaning Barrow Gurney took the victory at the last possible moment.
A fantastic game in great spirits between two well-matched sides which could have gone either way. We look forward to the re-match at the end of the season!
