National Club Championship – Bath CC 1st XI v Penzance CC 1st XI

Bath 1st XI travelled to Cornwall to play Penzance 1st XI on Sunday in the National Club Championship, where a quarter final spot was waiting for the winner.

After winning the toss and electing to bat first, Bath started positively but lost Jack Scrivens (12) early to leave the away side 19-1. But fellow opener, Aidan Cahill then raced to 36, as he and Charlie Brain took the score past 50, but Cahill and then Ben Church (5) found themselves back in the Pavilion to leave Bath 63-3. This brought the prolific, Sam Young to the crease who started to rebuild firstly through Brain (25) and then with skipper, Harry Ellison. This pair put on 70 for the fifth wicket, before Young went for an excellent 51. Ellison then led from the front batting effectively with the middle and lower order, to finish undefeated on 79 not out, having taken the Bath score up to a very competitive 237-7 from their 40 overs.

reply was full of powerful hitting from the start as the openers raced to a 77 run opening partnership, and although the wicket of Christian Purchase (33) was taken, Penzance continued to bat positively as their skipper, Ben Seabrook joined Jack Paull in the middle. With the home side needing just over 100 runs to win with still nine wickets in hand, Bath struck by removing Paull for an excellent 72. Seabrook continued to bat positively, but the return of Cahill (3-30) to the Bath attack removed two Penzance batters in quick succession. The match now hung in the balance, and even when Seabrook went for an excellent 56, Daniel Lello (38*) continued to bat well with the lower order to take Penzance very close, but in the end, they fell 14 runs short. Left arm spinner Josh Sutton, moving up from the 2s for this match, bowled particularly well, recording match figures of 2-33. Bath now progress to the quarter finals and will play either Teddington CC or East Molesey CC in an away fixture on Sunday 28th July.
